Part 3: The Whole Is Greater Than the Sum of Its Parts
There's a saying I've loved for years:
The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
Which is rather ironic, really.
Because this is coming from a woman who never even took Maths O-level, whose mathematical abilities barely extend beyond basic arithmetic, and who discovered much later in life that she has dyscalculia.
So the fact that one of my favourite expressions sounds suspiciously like a complicated mathematical equation is not lost on me!
But I've always understood what it means.
And that, to me, is SNOB.
Take away the clothes, the purple branding, the website, the shop fittings and the social media.
What have you got left?
Sixteen years of memories.
Thousands of conversations.
Friendships.
Trust.
A shared history.
A community.
And that's something you can't simply order from a wholesaler or generate with AI.
It's built one conversation, one customer and one ordinary Tuesday afternoon at a time.
THE PEOPLE WHO BECOME PART OF THE MAGIC
One of the things I've come to understand over 16 years is that SNOB has never stood still.
Yes, we've been a familiar part of Tiverton for all that time, but behind the shopfront, SNOB is constantly growing, changing and evolving.
With the customers who visit us.
With the people who work here.
And with whatever life, fashion and the outside world decide to throw at us.
Over the years, we've had some wonderful people become part of the SNOB story.
Some come into your life for a reason. Others for a season.
And every single one has brought something completely unique.
Their personalities, their humour, their experiences, their ideas. The friendships they develop with customers. The conversations they have. The way they make somebody feel.
No two members of staff will ever create quite the same relationships. And that's exactly how it should be.
Because SNOB isn't about everybody being the same.
It's about everybody bringing something of themselves to something bigger.
And when someone really gets the SNOB vibe, something rather special happens.
IT'S NOT JUST A PART-TIME JOB
Many of the women who work at SNOB are part-time.
They might only be here a couple of days a week.
And like all of us, they have lives outside these four walls.
Families. Responsibilities. Worries. Challenges. Sometimes things going on behind the scenes that nobody else would ever imagine.
I've always believed you never truly know what somebody else is going through until you've walked in their shoes.
But when they come into SNOB, they bring so much more than a few hours of their time.
They don't simply arrive at nine, put clothes on rails, serve customers and go home at five.
They engage.
They listen.
They laugh.
They remember people.
They build friendships and relationships that are entirely their own.
And they become part of the fabric of SNOB.
What's particularly wonderful is that the magic works both ways.
The people who work here help shape SNOB, but SNOB shapes them too.
It becomes a place where personalities flourish, confidence grows, friendships form and, sometimes, the worries of the outside world can be put to one side for a little while.
And the customers feel that.
They don't just walk into a shop staffed by people selling clothes.
They walk into an atmosphere created by all those different personalities, experiences and relationships coming together.
That's the magic.
Not everybody being identical.
Not everybody following a script.
But everybody understanding what SNOB is about, while bringing their own individual sparkle to it.
And perhaps that's why, after 16 years, SNOB can keep changing without ever losing what makes it SNOB.
THE MAGIC YOU CAN'T BUY
When I think about what SNOB has become, I don't think first about the clothes we've sold or the number of shops we've had.
I think about the people.
The conversations.
The friendships.
The extraordinary collection of personalities who've passed through our doors.
And I think about how all those individual experiences have somehow combined to create something bigger than any one of us.
Something that has its own personality.
Its own history.
Its own sense of belonging.
That's what I mean when I talk about the magic.
Not something mysterious or manufactured.
Something that happens naturally when people genuinely care about what they're doing and the people they're doing it for.
The whole really is greater than the sum of its parts.
And I might not be able to do the maths, but I've spent 16 years proving the equation.
Next time: Can AI create a brand? Absolutely. But can it create the magic?
